This yearlong course aims to make you an independent thinker and a sophisticated writer of English by helping you develop abilities to conduct research and write research papers. In the Fall semester, we focus on the methods of identifying an important topic, formulating a strong thesis, finding useful resources, and evaluating research material effectively, as well as general writing and reasoning techniques. In Spring, we will take everything a step further and help you enhance your competence in writing professionally. The course is designed with the conviction that learning to write research papers can be instrumental in honing one’s critical and creative thinking skills, something that will prove invaluable in pretty much every professional field, including but not limited to the academic world.

Class activities will include the following:
1. Research Issue Sessions: review of research issues through reading and discussion of textbook sections or sample articles.
2. Writing Workshops: hands-on exercises on important writing principles.
3. Critical Thinking Sessions: review of common logical fallacies.
4. Peer Editing: editing of fellow students’ work.
5. Library Session: a class with an NTU librarian on how to use library resources.
6. Individual Sessions: mandatory individual meetings with the instructor to discuss your project.
7. Conference: a meeting where each person gives an oral presentation on his/her project.
課程要求
1. Prepare in advance, come to class, and participate. If there is required reading assigned for the week, prior preparation is required. Active participation in class is expected, too. One absence may be allowed without penalty each semester.

2. Submit clean work. All the writing assignments must be word-processed following this format: A4-sized paper; 1-inch margins on all sides; double-spaced; 12-point Times New Roman font. Use the serial number this syllabus uses (A1, A2, etc.) in each assignment you submit. In most cases, turn in the assignment in hard copy form in class. When instructed specifically, submit your work on Ceiba.

3. Do not procrastinate. Assignments to be submitted in hard copy are due in class. Those to be submitted online are due by 12:00 noon of the due day. Late submission will suffer a deduction of three points per day (on a 100-point scale).

4. Work as a team. Peer editing is an integral part of the course. Each student will get a chance to have his/her work discussed in class anonymously. When you are informed that you will be the “spotlight person” of the week, be sure to email your work to the instructor at least six hours prior to the class meeting. During peer editing sessions, give constructive suggestions and be respectful of one another.

5. Be responsible. If you miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining the materials given out in class from your classmates (not from the instructor). Also ensure that you have someone turn in your assignment for you if you do not want it to be counted late.

6. Plagiarism or receiving outside help (the instructor aside) on the writing assignments will not be tolerated.
